II. “Archivist as a career path?”: Stacy

Many archivists earn their undergraduate degrees in History and combine this with a Masters in Library and Information Science or a Masters in Archival Studies. Some people in the USA also take the path of a Master’s Degree in Public History which is what I did at Wright State University in Ohio.

This programme had an equal concentration on museum studies and archives studies, as well as a complete MA in History.  I thought I would end up as a Museum Curator since I had had experience as a docent in a museum while in secondary school, a strong interest in material culture, and some study in fine arts and art history. However, my undergraduate degree was in Anthropology and during my time in graduate school I acquired a strong grounding in archival studies and found that I really enjoyed it. Subsequently I was fortunate to have internships in the Cincinnati Art Museum, in the University’s Archives, and another at the Biltmore House, working primarily on the architectural and landscape drawings by William Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmstead as well as with other collections including rare books, artwork, furniture and household items.
